AttoPilot experiences

In early March I got involved in a "proof-of-concept" project that was to use an RC airframe and an autopilot system.

Goal of the first phase:

1) Demonstrate the ability of an RC airframe under autopilot control to perform tasks such as fly a specified path at a set altitude and airspeed, and initiate an event at a designated point along the flight path.

2) Learn as much as possible about the "care and feeding" and the potential uses of the AUV system.

3) Do all of this at… Continue

Wing part found

I'm busy cutting video of the rescue and adding it to vimeo!

I could not believe how well it went.

If you have ever lost a model in a long crop you will know the feeling!

As soon as its finished I shall post on videos.

Rescue mission

I'm just about to go out the door to recover a wing section of airframe3

Yep we had a structural failure at a total weight of 2.1 and a bit kg.

Robert was at the sticks so thats all right!!

We found the bulk of it, I looked for the wing section that floated off but to no avail, so I quickly put a camera on airframe1 and flew vertical video over the area.

Having reviewed it I have seen it and now compared it to goog earth and will go look on the way to… Continue

Time passes

Only 18 hours to go, the two airframe versions are coming togther.

We have defined Airframe 1's task as 30 minutes, 500g and it can!

Why bendy wings are best

Guess the flex we have in the wing was designed in, we must have been thinking ahead.

Airframe1 in 3D

Just finished modelling the airframe in order hopefully to get it roughly right and working in Jarons UAV playground.

Its all a bit of a mystery but I'm pushing on.

Once Airframe 2 has flown in Gilbert then I will have more accurate performance data to tweak in Flightgear.

Then maybe I can simulate a few missions in the comfort of my own home ;-)…

Behind the times

I believe its 105 flights flown for a total of 3878 minutes airtime. Just a little bit behind where I need to be, 30 minutes to be precise.

At least at the end of all this standing around I will know that the airframe might survive for a while whilst performing some simple tasks I have in mind for it.

Airframe 3 is certainly going to have flaps to slow down heavy landings. (When you've loaded the thing with more than you should have)…
